Husi area
In 1415 Alexandru Voievod gives to Nichita and Dobre two villages at Draslavita...(today`s Husi), this fact being mentioned in 1436 in another document "...Iezerul and the vineyard..." found in the same places. Old documents inform us that between 1600 and 1662 large vineyards were planted on the fields of Saca and Ochi, at Huşi being created the royal vineyards.
Even older documents state the excellent quality of the Husi wines, these documents belonging to foreign travelers who met the medieval Moldavia. Relevant in this way is the statement of Marco Bandinus, made in 1646: "Husul, ancient location of Moldavian vineyards, gives us a tasty, flavored and much desired wine.
From Ştefan cel Mare şi Sfânt up to Alexandru Ioan Cuza (prince born in Huşi), almost all Romanian rulers have had the royal palace at Huşi. The institutions and the personalities of these places have completed the nature`s generosity and the endeavors of the natives, giving glamour to the city`s emblem.
Huşi and its nearby areas are locations to which its dedicated inhabitants provided the nickname of "land of wines" due to the wine crops and the unique wines.
No less than 300 names of great prestige from our history and culture belong to the sons of these fertile lands. The great estate man and scholar Dimitrie Cantemir, "king among philosophers and philosopher among kings" (as he was characterized at the Academy from Berlin) was born in the village Silisteni nearby Huşi (nowadays, the village bears his name). In "Descriptio Moldavae", he writes about the Moldovan wines, noticing that ... "the best wine is made at Cotnari, after this one wine coming as quality the wine from Husi.
As Nicolae Iorga states, one deals with many historical evidences, including the house where was born Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the prince named "the willing father and freedom bringer of the paysans" (this quotation comes from a letter addressed to the prince by the paysans from Falciu). The city and the vineyard of Huşi form an ancient entity of Romanian culture and civilization. There are several agriculture objects that were discovered in Husi, that are held in two museums - the ethnographical museum and the museum of wines. An important number of archaeological traces and documents written by well-known princes and scholars enhance the vineyard`s history up to nowadays. Almost all Moldavian princes had large vineyards and cellars in Husi, "painting" the hills and hillocks from the area with this ancestry jewel - the wine and vineyard.
In addition to the traditional wines as Zghihara de Huşi, Busuioaca de Bohotin de Huşi and Feteasca alba si neagra, new wines in large quantities and of superior quality were introduced: Riesling italian, Aligote, Oporto, Merlot, Cabernet, Sauvignon, Muscat Ottonel.
